Our Story

Founded in 2011, the foundation is legally registered in Tanzania and in the United States as 501(c)3 non-profit organization which serves as a platform to inspire, empower, and support girl to unleash their potential and achieve their dream lives. Flaviana Matata embarked on pursuing her passion alongside her modelling career by founding a non-profit organization that aims to provide educational opportunities to young girls in Tanzania. Since its inception, the foundation has evolved from providing scholarships alone to a variety of fully-fledged service resources; having realized that her efforts need to go beyond providing school supplies but rather strive to create a conducive and friendly environment for young girls to receive the education they deserve. Since then, Flaviana has initiated other ventures that seek to support and reinforce her mission —using girls' education as a tool.

Since inception, FMF has been funded largely through the founder’s personal contribution and minimal support from friends and individuals with passion to support girl's empowerment. Recently, the founder (Flaviana Matata) established a beauty and personal care brand “Lavy”—which produces sanitary pads and nail care. 10% of the profit from the sale of sanitary pads helps to fund the distribution of free sanitary pads to girls in schools.

Several researches and studies done have confirmed a significant need to support and empower girls in Tanzania. Understanding the need for multiple stakeholders and community engagement at large to support girls, FMF have continued to champion for the needs of girls through various menstrual hygiene trainings and campaigns. Recently, FMF introduced #DONATEAPERIOD campaign to continue to highlight a sense of urgency in supporting girls and appreciating FMF’s contribution to the society.

We work in both Tanzania Mainland and Zanzibar. Specifically in Tanzania Mainland, we have delivered projects in Dar Es Salaam, Pwani, Mtwara, Iringa, Dodoma, Lindi, Mbeya, Shinyanga, Mwanza, Kagera, Morogoro, Tanga, Arusha, Kilimanjaro, and Manyara Regions. FMF has reached and impacted over 8,500 students (boys and girls) in Tanzania. Over 8,000 girls have been impacted through various initiatives including Menstrual Health and Hygiene (MHH) trainings and school supplies. Also, 2,093 girls receive free sanitary pads every month and a total of 794 students benefits from a 32,000 litre clean and safe water facility constructed by the Foundation. Currently 25 students in secondary school and universities are sponsored by the Foundation and 29 girls are being trained under LAVY.

  1. Scholarships that pay for all costs associated with keeping girls in school from lower to higher learning institutions.

  2. Construction, renovation and refurbishment of school infrastructure that improve learning and make girls feel safe at school.

  3. Girls’ clubs and mentorship that build confidence and help girls tap into their agency.

  4. Access to job and entrepreneurial skills trainings, mentorship programs and opportunities that help girls find work or start businesses.

  5. A platform to advocate for girls’ education, with the help of our founder’s high profile in the fashion industry.

  6. Community outreach to sensitize the mass on supporting girls' unique needs.
